About the client
Pueblo Viejo is located in the Dominican Republic, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Santo Domingo, and is operated by the Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation (PVDC)—a joint venture between Barrick (60%) and Goldcorp (40%). It is the largest gold mine in the Americas and second largest in the world.
The problem
The Metallurgy department at Pueblo Viejo employs a number of citizens from the Dominican Republic as metallurgical technicians. Most have university qualifications in related fields such as Chemical Engineering or Chemistry but not specifically Metallurgy. Mineral processing at Pueblo Viejo is complex and involves some processes that are unique, so training materials are not easily sourced.
The solution
Barrick engaged Edge Learning Services to develop a number of training units to cover the processes in the Pueblo Viejo plant. Edge Learning worked closely with the metallurgists at the mine to determine the level of existing knowledge and tailor the materials to achieve the best outcome. Particular attention was paid to unique processes in the plant to ensure that the Met Techs would have the knowledge and skills to develop and incorporate the practical knowledge that they attained while at work.
The outcome
The Metallurgical Technicians are now progressing through the training program and incorporating the knowledge into their everyday work activities. Training materials are also used as reference materials when required. The knowledge and skills gained in the training will assist the Metallurgical Technicians in their progression and give any new employees a solid foundation for building new skills.
