About the client

The Porgera Joint Venture is an open pit and underground gold mine located at an altitude of 2,200 to 2,700 metres in the Enga Province of Papau New Guinea.  The operation is roughly 130kms west of Mt Hagan and 600kms northwest of the capital, Port Moresby.  Porgera is the second largest gold mine in PNG and is regarded as one of the world’s top ten producing mines.  The mine employs approximately 2,500 people and 500 contractors.

The problem

Porgera JV has a policy of employing people from the communities surrounding the mine, wherever possible. However, there are a limited number of local people who have the skills required for work at the mine. Therefore, an extensive training is required to ensure that the local mine employees can safely and effectively perform their duties.

The solution

Porgera JV engaged Edge Learning Services to develop 64 units of competency in the areas of open pit and underground mining. Each unit was comprised of training and presentation materials, assessments and trainer’s materials. The content was written to align with the relevant Australian Standards for each unit and aimed at the appropriate level to ensure that the knowledge could be effectively transferred to the trainees.

The outcome

The development of the Units of Competency has contributed to the extensive training and education program at Porgera. This program has resulted in many people gaining the skills for employment at the Porgera mine and in the local communities. Approximately 95% of the Porgera workforce are now from PNG.
